In 2017, Huntsville lost one of its most creative souls: Kareen Burns. In 2018, in honor of her impact, a Wellie Garden was created at Hunter’s Bay Radio Station. The idea came from a Wellie Garden in St. Monans, a small fishing village in Scotland, near where Kareen holidayed in the summer as a child. Boots were contributed by various community members. Wellies were holed, filled with soil, and planted with flowers. Some were painted and some just left as they were.
This year the wellies have been replanted and placed in and around the gardens at Rivermill Park. Led by artists Kirsty Williamson, Joan Gemmell and Catherine Cole, the exhibition features over 70 planted wellies. The artists invite additional community members to bring their own filled boots to pay tribute and remember someone who they have lost. Anyone interested in contributing can contact the Huntsville Festival of the Arts at info@huntsvillefestival.ca or by phone at 705-788-2787.
